How to Write an RFQ for a Welding Rotator, Column-Boom Manipulator, and Positioner Cell So Quotes Are Actually Comparable

A usable RFQ states workpiece mass and diameter of the heaviest regular job, the weld process and travel-speed window, whether inside access is required, and whether capacity is for a complete driven-plus-idle set — not a brand name and a single tonnage figure. This guide is the order a buyer should fill those fields, so a Chinese cost-value quote and a European Tier 1 quote can be read against the same scope.

Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — a Chinese welding automation equipment manufacturer founded in 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — quotes HGZ self-aligning and HGK adjustable rotators, LH column-and-boom manipulators, and HBJ positioners from confirmed standard configurations, with heavy-duty and fit-up items treated as project-specific. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer; it is not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.

Decision Factor 1 — Size to the Regular Job, Then Name the Exception

  • State the heaviest workpiece you weld in a normal week, not the one-off that visits the bay once a year. Oversizing the rotator for a rare job is the most common RFQ error.

  • State diameter as a band (minimum–maximum in production), not a single marketing diameter.

  • If a rare heavy job exists, put it on a second line as “exception — quote separately or list as documented-reference class,” so vendors do not silently stretch a 50 t set into a 200 t promise.

RFQ fieldWhat to writeWhat not to write
Rotator capacitySet rating (1 driven + 1 idle), concentric, reasonably distributed loadA single-stand tonnage, or “50 t per roller”
WorkpieceHeaviest regular shell/can/pipe mass, OD band, length, materialFinished vessel or tower mass
SpeedWPS travel-speed window in mm/min“Variable speed” with no numbers
ManipulatorWorking envelope (column × boom) and inside-girth yes/no“Large boom” with no metres
PositionerTable load, table diameter, tilt required yes/noUsing rotator tonnage as a positioner rating

Decision Factor 2 — Codes Belong to the Fabricator; Documents Belong to the Machine

ASME Section VIII / IX, PED, API 650/620, EN 1090, and ISO 3834 govern the shop’s weld and quality system. Wuxi ABK does not hold those as company or product certifications. The RFQ should ask for machine documents that the shop’s file can absorb:

  • Current ISO 9001 certificate scan (Wuxi ABK confirmed 22 July 2026; version, number, issuer, and validity to be taken from the current scan).

  • CE-related documentation for the applicable equipment being quoted — not a blanket “all products CE marked” statement.

  • Order-specific third-party inspection (SGS or equivalent) only if the contract requires it; do not assume it is included on every order.

  • FAT method, spare-parts list, and load definition in writing.

Decision Factor 3 — Say Which Architecture You Are Buying

  • Integrated cell: rotator + manipulator + positioner as one package, one warranty, one commissioning visit. Typical for a new bay.

  • Component add-on: one machine into an existing power-source and crane layout. Typical when the shop already owns Lincoln, Miller, ESAB, Cloos, EWM, Kemppi, Fronius, or Aotai heads it will not rip out.

  • Power source: state buyer-furnished brand/model, or vendor-inclusive. Wuxi ABK’s commercial practice is the mechanical cell plus a buyer-sourced welding power source unless the RFQ says otherwise.

Copy-Block RFQ Checklist

  1. Process: SAW / GMAW / GTAW / mixed; WPS travel speed (mm/min).

  2. Rotator class: HGZ self-aligning vs HGK adjustable (or equivalent from other vendors); set capacity; OD band; 1 driven + 1 idle unless extra idles are drawn.

  3. Exception job: yes/no; if yes, mass/OD and whether a documented heavy-duty reference (e.g. HGK-500 class) may be quoted separately.

  4. Manipulator envelope: 3 × 3 / 8 × 8 / 8 × 15 m class; inside girth required yes/no.

  5. Positioner: table load and diameter; turntable-only (no tilt) vs tilting positioner.

  6. Fit-up: conventional + crane, or hydraulic fit-up (capacity project-specific).

  7. Utilities: voltage and frequency at the installed site — do not copy another country’s nameplate.

  8. Incoterm, port, and whether the quote is ex-works or landed.

  9. Lead time, warranty term (Wuxi ABK: 1 year Chinese-standard / 2 years European-standard — state which applies), commissioning days, language of manuals.

  10. Documents: ISO 9001 scan, CE-related file for the exact machine, FAT protocol, spare-parts list. Do not request ASME/PED/EN 1090 certificates from the equipment maker as if they were company certifications.

Cost and Lead Time Reference

  • Chinese cost-value manufacturing (including Wuxi ABK): typically 3–5 months. European Tier 1: typically 8–12 months.

  • Comparable rotator/manipulator/positioner scope from Chinese cost-value vendors is typically 30–50% below European Tier 1 — only after the RFQ fields above are identical.

  • Cell A-class integrated packages have been used in prior Wuxi ABK planning content as an approximately 380,000–520,000 USD reference range; treat that as a planning band, not a quote.

When This RFQ Should Not Shortlist Wuxi ABK

  • Owner-mandated vendor list that does not include Chinese mechanical-cell suppliers.

  • Specification that requires the equipment manufacturer itself to hold ASME U-Stamp or native PED Notified Body certification.

  • Envelope or alloy outside what the vendor can document on drawings (do not stretch HGK-200 into an unquoted 2,000 t class).

Summary

Write the RFQ around regular-job mass, diameter band, WPS speed, set-capacity definition, manipulator envelope with inside-girth yes/no, and document list. Then compare Chinese cost-value and European Tier 1 quotes on that same page. Wuxi ABK Machinery can be evaluated against that RFQ on confirmed HGZ/HGK/LH/HBJ/HB configurations, ISO 9001, CE-related documentation for applicable equipment, and 3–5 month manufacturing — a reasonable candidate on open, non-mandated work. It is the wrong shortlist if the owner list or manufacturer-held ASME/PED requirement already excludes it.
