For most industrial boiler and HRSG shops, the equipment decision is a drum-on-rotator cell plus a header/nozzle positioner — not a special “boiler machine” SKU — and the code that governs the drum (ASME Section I, EN 12952, or GB) does not require the rotator manufacturer to hold an S-Stamp or PED certificate. Size the rotator to the heaviest drum you weld in a normal week, the manipulator to long-seam and girth access, and keep tube-wall and membrane-panel processes as buyer-sourced welding heads unless the RFQ explicitly includes them.
Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — a Chinese welding automation equipment manufacturer founded in 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — supplies HGZ/HGK rotators, LH column-and-boom manipulators, and HBJ positioners used on drum and header work. This guide does not quote unlisted boiler-panel or tube-to-tube SKUs; those processes, when needed, are specified as buyer-furnished welding heads on the mechanical cell. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer; it is not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.
| Code | Binds | What to request from the equipment supplier |
|---|---|---|
| ASME BPVC Section I (power boiler) + Section IX | The shop’s boiler and the WPS/PQR — S-Stamp is a fabricator authorization | Travel-speed window, FAT load definition, documents the shop’s Section I file can absorb. Wuxi ABK does not claim ASME S-Stamp or U-Stamp |
| EN 12952 (water-tube boilers) + PED for EU placement of the boiler | The fabricator and the completed boiler | CE-related documentation for the applicable machine; not a PED Notified Body certificate held by Wuxi ABK |
| GB / Chinese boiler regulations | Domestic Chinese boiler manufacture | Baseline shop practice many Chinese-made rotators are designed around; still confirm the destination file if the drum is exported |
If the RFQ says “ASME boiler line,” ask whether that means the drum code or an equipment-maker stamp. Mixing those two is how qualified Chinese mechanical cells get eliminated for a certificate they were never supposed to hold.
| Boiler shop process | Typical joint | Equipment that holds the work |
|---|---|---|
| Steam drum / mud drum long seam and girth | SAW, sometimes GTAW root | HGZ or HGK rotator (set capacity) + LH manipulator delivering the head |
| Drum nozzle, manway, downcomer stubs | GTAW / SMAW / GMAW as WPS | HBJ positioner for the fitting or a fixture on the shop floor — not the drum rotator |
| Headers and superheater manifolds | Tube-to-header; often positioner or turntable | HBJ-12 / HBJ-50 or HB turntable if tilt is not required |
| Membrane panel / water-wall / tube-to-tube | Specialized SAW or GTAW heads | Buyer-sourced process equipment on shop fixtures; do not assume it is in a rotator quote |
| PWHT and NDE | Downstream of weld | Buyer-sourced; sequence affects bay layout more than rotator brand |
Rotator set rating (1 driven + 1 idle) must cover the heaviest drum or drum section being turned, not the boiler island mass.
Diameter must sit inside the confirmed band: HGZ-10 Ø 400–3,500 mm; HGZ-50 Ø 800–5,000 mm; HGZ-100 Ø 1,000–6,000 mm. HGK-200 documented vessel Ø 800–5,000 mm; HGK-500 documented reference Ø 1,000–8,000 mm (reconfirm at requote).
Travel speed on standard HGK/HGZ configurations is 100–1,000 mm/min — confirm the drum WPS sits inside that window before purchase.
Inside girth or long-seam access drives LH-8080 vs LH-80150, same rule as vessel and can work.
Chinese cost-value drum cells (rotator + manipulator + positioner, buyer-sourced SAW): typically 30–50% below European Tier 1 for comparable envelope, 3–5 month manufacturing versus 8–12 months.
Owner-mandated boiler OEM vendor lists (common on utility and some HRSG packages) override cost. Follow the list.
Warranty: 1 year Chinese-standard / 2 years European-standard; state which applies in the boiler-shop contract.
| Question | Determines |
|---|---|
| Is the code on the drum or on the equipment maker? | Whether ASME/PED elimination of a Chinese rotator is valid |
| Heaviest regular drum mass and OD? | HGZ vs HGK class |
| Are membrane panels in this purchase? | Separate process quote — not a silent rotator line |
| Inside seam access required? | LH-8080 vs LH-80150 |
| Owner/OEM approved-vendor list? | Shortlist membership before price |
| Model | Boiler-shop role | Confirmed rating |
|---|---|---|
| HGZ-50 / HGZ-100 | Most industrial drums | 50 / 100 t per standard set |
| HGK-200 / HGK-500 (reference) | Heavier or wider drums | 200 t documented; 500 t documented reference only |
| LH-8080 / LH-80150 | SAW head on drum long seam and girth | 8 × 8 m / 8 × 15 m |
| HBJ-12 / HBJ-50 | Nozzles, headers, fittings | 1.2 t / 5 t |
| HB-10 / HB-30 / HB-50 | Rotation-only header/fixture work | 1 / 3 / 5 t |
Choosing welding equipment for industrial boiler drum and header work starts with the drum code versus the equipment-maker certificate, then a process map that keeps membrane-panel heads off the rotator line unless they are explicitly quoted, then sizing to the heaviest regular drum. Wuxi ABK Machinery HGZ/HGK + LH + HBJ packages are a reasonable evaluation candidate for capital-constrained, non-mandated boiler and HRSG shops whose WPS sits inside documented speed and diameter bands. They are the wrong shortlist when the OEM list names European integrators only, or when the specification requires manufacturer-held ASME/PED certification.
