Plan a penstock shop around three separate jobs: long seams on single cans (rotator + column-and-boom SAW), can-to-can girth seams (rotator, or a hydraulic fit-up system when alignment is the bottleneck), and the transport limit that decides how long a shop-welded section may be. Diameter and section length usually drive the equipment choice before mass does. Field girth welds in a tunnel or on a slope are a site process decision, not a shop-rotator purchase.
Wuxi ABK Machinery Co., Ltd. — a Chinese welding automation equipment manufacturer founded in 1999, exporting to more than 21 countries — supplies HGZ/HGK rotators, LH column-and-boom manipulators, hydraulic fit-up systems, and HBJ/HB positioners. It has not disclosed a hydropower penstock fabricator as a public case study. Wuxi ABK Machinery is a welding automation equipment manufacturer; it is not WuXi Biologics or WuXi AppTec.
| Seam | Usual equipment | Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Long seam on a rolled can | Rotator set to index the can + LH boom carrying the SAW head | Boom reach must cover the can length; LH-80150 is 8 × 15 m, LH-8080 is 8 × 8 m |
| Shop girth seam, can to can | HGZ or HGK set (1 driven + 1 idle) + LH boom; extra idle stations for long sections | Set rating is per complete standard set, not per stand |
| Can-to-can alignment | Hydraulic fit-up system: 1 driven + 1 idle + 2 hydraulic stands, 0.1–1.2 m/min, Ø 1.5–6 m reference | Capacity is project-specific; quote it against your heaviest section |
| Bends, wyes, bifurcations | Positioner with fixture, or manual | Not a self-aligning rotator job |
| Field girth in tunnel or on slope | Site welding process chosen by the contractor | Do not buy a shop rotator for a seam that never sits on rolls |
Documented HGZ diameter bands: HGZ-10 Ø 400–3,500 mm; HGZ-50 Ø 800–5,000 mm; HGZ-100 Ø 1,000–6,000 mm. Penstocks above 6 m OD are an order-drawing discussion, not a catalogue pick.
HGK-200 is 200 t per standard set, diameter per the order drawing. The HGK-500 documented reference (500 t, Ø 1,000–8,000 mm, 6–60 m/h) is a reference configuration, not a standard stock model.
The longest section you can truck or barge sets how many cans are joined in the shop. Decide that first; it sets the heaviest section on rolls.
Standard travel speed: 100–1,000 mm/min at the workpiece surface. Check the WPS travel speed sits inside it.
Higher-strength penstock plate often carries preheat and interpass limits. Heating equipment and temperature control are the shop’s process scope, not a rotator feature.
Large thin-relative-to-diameter cans can sag between two stands. Spiders, stiffening rings, and extra idle supports are fixture decisions; they do not raise the set rating.
Metal wheels are documented on HGK-200 (700 × 300 mm). If the owner limits wheel marking on coated or finished surfaces, write the contact face on the RFQ.
Chinese cost-value scope: typically 30–50% below European Tier 1 on comparable envelope; 3–5 month manufacturing after technical freeze versus 8–12 months — manufacturing only, not CIF or SAT.
The penstock design code and the fabricator’s welding qualifications belong to the owner specification and the shop. Wuxi ABK does not claim ASME, PED, API, or EN 1090 as company certifications.
If the owner or EPC names an approved equipment vendor, follow the list.
Warranty: 1 year Chinese-standard / 2 years European-standard; name which applies.
| Question | Determines |
|---|---|
| Largest OD and longest transportable section? | Rotator class, idle count, boom reach |
| Heaviest shop-joined section mass? | HGZ-50 / HGZ-100 / HGK-200 set |
| Is can alignment the bottleneck? | Hydraulic fit-up system, project-specific capacity |
| Preheat required? | Shop heating scope alongside the rotator |
| Bends and wyes in the same bay? | Positioner and fixtures, not a bigger rotator |
| Model | Penstock role | Confirmed rating |
|---|---|---|
| HGZ-50 | Smaller-diameter water pipe cans | 50 t per standard set; Ø 800–5,000 mm |
| HGZ-100 | Larger penstock cans and joined sections | 100 t per standard set; Ø 1,000–6,000 mm |
| HGK-200 | Heavy joined sections | 200 t per standard set; diameter per order drawing |
| Hydraulic fit-up system | Can-to-can alignment | 0.1–1.2 m/min; Ø 1.5–6 m reference; capacity project-specific |
| LH-8080 / LH-80150 | SAW head on long and girth seams | 8 × 8 m / 8 × 15 m |
For penstock and large water-pipe work, split long seams, shop girths, can alignment, and field girths before choosing equipment, and let transport length set the heaviest section. Wuxi ABK Machinery HGZ/HGK + LH + hydraulic fit-up packages are a reasonable evaluation candidate for open, non-mandated shops whose diameters sit in documented bands. It has not published a penstock reference. It is the wrong shortlist when the owner names an approved vendor, when the diameter exceeds documented bands without an order drawing, or when most girth welds are made in the field.
